Prez Says for October 2022

KEGS newsletter

Volume 26, Issue 10

Welcome to October, Fall colors, and Halloween trick-or-treaters!  The Tech Corner, General Meeting, and Linux SIG are all now hybrid meetings with growing attendance. The Digital Imaging SIG has opted to continue with Zoom meetings only.

On October 4th, our General Meeting program will be "Cyber-Safety in the Digital Age" presented by Bob Gostischa.  The way we live, work, and play has changed dramatically over the course of the past half-century.  The 9-5 economics of years past have been replaced with globally integrated 24/7 service offerings.  Consumers in the digital age have access to a host of services and products that could have previously been considered available only in the realms of science fiction.  This presentation points out the dangers and offers suggestions that will aid in keeping you secure in this digital era. Using the right programs and apps can help keep you safe and secure as well as shrink your digital footprint. Using free programs and apps whenever possible to accomplish this goal is an added bonus and this presentation includes information on many recommended free programs. Join presenter Bob Gostischa as he guides you in the right direction to enhance your Cyber-safety in the digital age.  Bob will answer your questions after his presentation.

We always need more members, so please let others know about the informative meetings we have monthly and all of the free help we offer.  Please check the KEGS Calendar for dates and times of meetings.  We welcome visitors!

Prez Says for September 2022

KEGS newsletter

Volume 26, Issue 9

Welcome to September and maybe cooler weather!  We are now able to meet in person at the North Bellevue Community Center on Tuesdays in Room D.  Our meetings at the Center are Hybrid (in-person meeting and Zoom meeting combined).

On September 6th, our General Meeting program will be "QR Codes and More" presented by John Krout.  QR codes provide a great variety of info and are popular for communicating Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), also known as web page addresses.  Find out how your smartphone can read QR codes and other barcodes.  In particular, find out about the info stored about you in the barcode on the back of your driver's license or state ID card.  Some stores, including grocery stores where the presenter lives, now scan that barcode when alcohol is purchased.  The scan obtains a great deal more personal info than your birth date.  John will show us how to create QR codes for lots of everyday uses.  Have you used the QR Bot App?  Please plan to join us in person or via Zoom.

KEGS Member Andy Peck is our new Leader for the Technology Corner Special Interest Group that meets at 6:00 PM before the 7:00 PM General Meeting at the Center.  Our Linux Special Interest Group will meet on September 13th at 6:30 PM at the Center, and our Digital Imaging Special Interest Group will meet on September 27th at 7:00 PM via Zoom.

We always need more members, so please let others know about the informative meetings we have monthly and all of the free help we offer.  Please check the KEGS Calendar for dates and times of meetings.  We welcome visitors!

Prez Says for December 2022

KEGS newsletter

Volume 26, Issue 12

Welcome to December, snow, festive lights, and Christmas!  I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Holiday Season this year.

When inclement weather (such as snow/ice) causes the Bellevue School District to close, the North Bellevue Community Center closes for events/meetings and only serves as a warming center.  If we have snow or ice on Tuesday, December 6th, please check to see if the Bellevue School District has closed.  If that happens, we will only meet via Zoom instead of having our usual hybrid meeting.

On December 6th our General Meeting program will be "Encryption Software" presented by Mark Schulman. Losing a laptop or flash drive might mean you're out of money, but it doesn't have to mean that your private data leaks into the world.  Learn how to use encryption software to protect your private data on a computer, external hard drive, or USB flash drive. Please join us for this informative program.

The Tech Corner, General Meeting, and Linux SIG are all now hybrid meetings with growing attendance. The Digital Imaging SIG has opted to continue with Zoom meetings only.  Be sure to check the KEGS Calendar https://www.kegs.org/calendar for updated information about our meetings.
